    Drive-In Rack in Davis, CA

In Davis, drive-in rack should serve uniform reserve batches rather than become a default home for a varied supply inventory. Many pallets of a few SKUs can occupy deep, dense storage lanes, while materials requiring individual retrieval remain elsewhere. Separating those roles is the starting point for a workable layout.

For a research-supply operation along Second Street, the drawing should protect inspection space and accessible stock faces. Near Chiles Road, reserve lanes should stay clear of adjacent work areas and their replenishment paths. These location-based planning questions help define the storage boundary without assuming that every building handles the same materials.

Developing a Drive-In Pallet Rack Plan

    1

    Separate inventory groups

List reserve batches apart from mixed supplies and material awaiting release. Identify which groups can share a retrieval sequence without disrupting inspection, identification or daily replenishment.

    2

    Document loads and equipment

Supply pallet construction, loaded dimensions, maximum weight and forklift specifications. Photographs can clarify unusual loads, but measured dimensions remain necessary for support and clearance decisions.

    3

    Set the rotation method

Drive-in retrieval is normally LIFO, or last in, first out. Drive-thru racking supports FIFO when two accessible faces allow loading at one end and withdrawal at the other.

    4

    Review the proposed arrangement

Compare lane depth with expected stock levels and replenishment frequency. Confirm that inspection areas, work boundaries and the approaches to both storage and picking remain usable.

Drive-In Rack Decisions Start With Inventory Access

We ask which products can wait behind another pallet and which need immediate selection. That distinction matters more than the total pallet count. An inventory containing numerous specialty items may need only a modest dense-storage block, with most positions remaining selective. Lane assignments should reflect SKU depth and release status, not merely similar packaging.

The handling review follows the load into the structure. A forklift travels inside the storage lane and sets pallets onto support rails; its wheels stay on the floor, never on the rails. Truck width, mast clearance and pallet overhang all influence the usable opening. We review those details together before treating any proposed position as workable.

Our operation is a division of Warehouse Equipment & Supplies Co., with supplying and installing experience extending back to 1997. We use that experience to explain equipment tradeoffs in operating terms. A useful proposal connects storage density to retrieval restrictions, pallet requirements and the surrounding work floor rather than presenting capacity as the only decision.

Drive-In Rack Specifications Beyond Pallet Count

Support rails must match the actual pallet bearing surfaces and loading direction. We examine pallet width, underside construction, loaded deflection and overhang before selecting rail spacing. Maximum weight determines the load requirement; a lighter average does not describe the most demanding position. Consistent pallets are especially important when placement occurs deep inside a lane with limited viewing angles.

Entry guides and internal clearances need to suit the handling truck rather than an assumed forklift category. Guide width must account for tires and body dimensions, while support elevations must accommodate mast and carriage movement. The approach aisle also needs enough turning room. A truck that fits between uprights while empty may still conflict with the structure when carrying a wide load.

Compare pushback where reserve pallets repeat but operators should stay outside the rack. Pushback stores loads on carts and typically uses LIFO, while drive-in relies on the forklift entering each lane. The comparison should include retrieval frequency, pallet compatibility and working depth. Neither option replaces independent access for mixed items that must be selected without moving other products.

Temperature-controlled storage can be a suitable application, subject to the specified environment and equipment. Cooler or freezer planning requires a review of finishes, pallet condition, operating temperatures and forklift capability. Inventory identification remains the operator's responsibility in every environment, and physical lane sequencing must agree with the intended batch withdrawal procedure. The temperature specification belongs alongside the load list when comparing equipment options.

High volume of a small number of SKUs
Seasonal or buffer inventory held in bulk
Cold storage and freezer rooms where cube matters most
Product too fragile to floor-stack more than two high
Buildings where floor space, not height, is the binding constraint
